Pink, with a surprisingly grown-up point of view
The Addison Ross Bobbin Salt or Pepper Mill in Mauve brings colour into the kitchen without feeling the need to take over the entire room. Its muted pink sits somewhere between powdery, warm and gently nostalgic, paired with the distinctive Bobbin silhouette of four stacked rounded forms. At 23.5 cm high including the screw knob, with a 7 cm base diameter, this Addison Ross mill has enough presence for the dining table while remaining pleasingly easy to handle. It is crafted from sustainably sourced rubberwood and finished with eight coats of high-gloss lacquer, each layer hand-polished to give the surface its smooth, rich depth and characteristic shine. A polished stainless-steel screw knob adds a crisp metallic detail at the top. In fact, you get two: one marked “S” and another marked “P”, allowing the Bobbin Mill to be used for either salt or pepper. Pink, it turns out, is quite capable of deciding what it wants to be.
Good form has a rather practical side
Decorative as the lacquered Bobbin Mill may be, it is very much designed to earn its place at the table. Inside is a ceramic grinding mechanism, activated by turning the mill clockwise. The screw knob at the top also adjusts the grind: tightening it produces a finer result, although it should never be overtightened as this can damage the ceramic mechanism. Addison Ross recommends black peppercorns or dry rock salt up to 4 mm in size; sea salt, wet salt and pink peppercorns should not be used. Care is refreshingly simple, too. Wipe the mill with a soft, damp cloth rather than immersing it in water, and avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight. The result is a colourful object with enough substance behind its good looks to become part of everyday cooking and dining rather than simply posing for photographs.
Four curves and a definite fondness for colour
Addison Ross is a British family business whose story began in 1978 with a gallery on the Scottish border. The Addison Ross Gallery in Belgravia followed later, while collaborations with galleries and interior designers led first to handcrafted frames and eventually to an expanding collection of decorative home accessories. The Bobbin collection reveals a particularly playful side of the brand's design language. Its turned silhouette recalls traditional bobbin forms, while the glossy lacquer brings the shape firmly into the present. Mauve gives those curves a softer mood than some of the collection's bolder shades. It is precisely the sort of object we enjoy at LIVOSY: clearly useful, but still capable of bringing atmosphere and personality to an everyday setting. Design does not have to whisper simply because it is intended to stay.
Mauve is looking for company. It won't take long.
This soft pink is surprisingly easy to live with. Pair the Addison Ross Bobbin Mill with cream, white, pale wood and natural tones for a warm, quiet setting, or introduce stainless steel and dark cutlery for a sharper contrast. For a more playful salt and pepper pairing, combine Mauve with a second Bobbin Mill in Aubergine, Mustard or another colour from the collection. Mauve and Aubergine work particularly well together, staying within a related colour family without looking like a conventional matching set. Alternatively, an Addison Ross Chubbie Mill introduces another silhouette to the table. Each mill is supplied with both stainless-steel S and P screw knobs and, according to Addison Ross, comes beautifully gift boxed. All that remains is deciding what goes inside. Finding somewhere to display it should be considerably easier.
