Woodland character, with a rather calm side

A stag's head on the sideboard might initially sound rather country-house. This one has other ideas. The Engels Kerzen Deer Object Candle from the ENGELS OBJEKTE collection translates the distinctive woodland motif into a calm, sculptural home accessory. Made from paraffin wax and finished with velvet lacquer in the colour Pebble, the grey object candle features a carefully modelled stag's head with sweeping antlers, finely rendered fur, ears and facial details. The understated Pebble shade allows those textures to take centre stage and gives the unusual shape an almost stone-like, contemporary appearance. Measuring 18.5 cm high, 15 cm wide and 13 cm long, the deer has enough presence for a sideboard, shelf, console or generously laid table without turning the entire room into a woodland theme. Against pale timber it feels natural and relaxed; on darker surfaces it becomes more graphic, while glass, ceramics and natural stone give it the presence of a small design object. Cream, beige, brown, fir green and burgundy also make natural companions. Light the wick and the sculpture reveals its second purpose: genuine candlelight. The object candle should always be placed securely on a suitable heat-resistant surface or candle plate. Engels Kerzen recommends trimming the wick to approximately 1.5 cm before lighting and allowing the upper layer of wax sufficient time to melt on the first burn. Decorative object or candle? The form may be playful, but the craftsmanship behind it has serious roots. Engels Kerzen produces its candles at its manufactory in Kempen, Germany, with a history stretching back to 1933. Now run by the third generation, the family business combines traditional candle-making with contemporary colours, surfaces and shapes. Wax, wick, burning characteristics and design are treated as parts of the same quality philosophy, with many stages of production carried out with careful craftsmanship. This expertise becomes particularly visible in the object candle collection, where the modelled form matters every bit as much as the eventual flame.
