Burgundy makes candlelight feel a little warmer

A rich burgundy red, a calm flame and 15 centimetres of height give these candles just enough presence on the table without asking to be the centre of attention. This ENGELS ORIGINAL set by Engels Kerzen contains two handmade pillar candles crafted from solid-coloured paraffin wax, each measuring 15 cm high and 8 cm in diameter. The deep red feels warm and wonderfully grown-up, while being surprisingly easy to combine: pair it with pale wood and cream for a softer contrast, darker shades and metal for something more defined, or glass and ceramics for a relaxed setting. A signature feature of the ENGELS ORIGINAL collection is its carefully hand-polished surface with a subtle silky sheen. The top of each cast pillar candle is equally distinctive, with a rounded polished rim and a candle plate that curves gently inwards. The paraffin wax is vegan and REACH certified, the candles feature a burn stop and are made in Germany. With an approximate burn time of 82 hours each, the pair is also rather good at staying around. Which is fortunate, because saving burgundy exclusively for Christmas would be a bit of a waste.

Fifteen centimetres, plenty of possibilities

At this height, the pillar candles sit comfortably between understated table decoration and a deliberate home accessory. Use the pair to frame a dining table, arrange them together on a larger candle plate or tray, or give each one its own place on a sideboard or windowsill. Their paraffin is refined in Germany and is REACH certified. According to Engels Kerzen, the specially developed wax formulation supports a calm, even burn and a bright flame. To encourage an even burn, Engels recommends trimming the wick to approximately 1 cm before first lighting and checking the length again before subsequent use.
