Some things on the table are quite happy to blend into the background. These two only partly agree – and that rather suits them. This ENGELS ORIGINAL set by Engels Kerzen contains two handmade pillar candles in deep burgundy, each measuring 20 cm high and 8 cm in diameter. Their tall, slender silhouette gives the rich colour plenty of space and makes the candles a distinctive home accessory even before they are lit. Made in Germany from solid-coloured paraffin wax, the burgundy tone runs through the candle rather than simply sitting on its surface. A signature of the ENGELS ORIGINAL collection is the silky sheen created by carefully polishing every candle by hand. The top reveals another characteristic detail of these cast pillar candles, with its rounded polished rim and candle plate curving gently inwards. The paraffin wax is vegan and REACH certified, and both candles feature a burn stop. With an approximate burn time of 108 hours each, they have considerable staying power too. Christmas is an obvious occasion, of course. It certainly is not an expiry date.

A colour with no intention of waiting for December

At 20 cm high, these burgundy pillar candles create a deliberate accent and work particularly well in arrangements where different heights meet. Place them alongside shorter pillar candles to build a relaxed landscape of colour and candlelight, or give the pair individual candle plates for a calmer, more symmetrical look. Burgundy itself changes character depending on its surroundings. Pale wood, off-white and natural shades soften the deep red, while dark metal, glass and rich greens give it greater depth. This makes the candles equally at home in autumn table settings, Advent arrangements, birthdays and weddings, or at a dinner table in the middle of spring. Their clean cylindrical shape also works beautifully on a sideboard, console or windowsill without any seasonal decoration. Although a few branches certainly won't hurt.

Those 108 hours start with quite a lot of handwork

Engels Kerzen has been producing candles in its own German manufactory since 1933, combining decades of candle-making knowledge with a contemporary approach to interiors and table culture. Each candle is cast and individually polished by hand before leaving the manufactory. The paraffin is refined in Germany and REACH certified; according to Engels Kerzen, its formulation supports a bright flame and calm, even burning. A little difference in height keeps things interesting

The 20 cm pillar candles pair particularly well with shorter sizes from the ENGELS ORIGINAL collection. Combining several heights in the same burgundy shade creates a calm arrangement with just enough movement, while adding other colours introduces a more deliberate contrast. Simple candle plates and holders, lanterns, bowls or slender Engels Fine Line taper candles make natural companions too. The same group can therefore move easily from a warm autumn display to a restrained Christmas setting without needing an entirely new look. To encourage an even burn, Engels recommends trimming the wick to approximately 1 cm before first lighting and checking the length again before each subsequent use. All that remains is finding the pair a good place to stay. With around 108 hours of burn time per candle, it is worth choosing well.
