Four times black. Somehow, it feels rather inviting.

Four black candles on one table could look rather serious. These have other ideas. This set of four ribbed candles from the ENGELS KLASSIK collection by Engels Kerzen combines pronounced vertical grooves with deep black velvet lacquer and a gently tapered top. Each ribbed candle measures 15 cm high and 8 cm in diameter and is handcrafted and dipped in Germany using solid-coloured paraffin wax. The distinctive matt surface catches light rather than strongly reflecting it, giving the black colour remarkable depth while emphasising the sculptural ribbed structure. The velvet-lacquer finish is also resistant to fingerprints, which comes in rather handy when arranging four candles. The paraffin wax is vegan and REACH-certified, and each individual candle offers a burn time of approximately 68 hours. With four matching candles in the set, there is plenty of scope for a generous tablescape, an Advent wreath, several candle holders or a considered arrangement across a sideboard or coffee table.

Four candles, considerably more possibilities

The pleasure of a set is that there is no need to hunt for matching companions. All four ribbed candles share the same height, colour and finish, creating an instantly calm visual rhythm. Arrange them symmetrically along a dining table, place them between glassware and flowers, or group them closely together on a large decorative plate or tray. Four black candles also make an interesting alternative to traditional colours on an Advent wreath. A finish that prefers to hold the light

Engels Kerzen has been producing candles at its German manufactory since 1933, combining traditional candle-making skills with a strong sense of colour, form and surface. Its velvet lacquer is a particularly good example. Rather than reflecting incoming light like a glossy finish, the matt surface visually absorbs it. On the ENGELS KLASSIK ribbed candles, this creates a subtle interplay of light and shadow along the vertical grooves and gives the black finish its distinctive depth. Behind the design is considerable experience with wax, wicks and burning behaviour too. To encourage an even burn, Engels Kerzen recommends trimming the wick to approximately 1 cm before first lighting and before each subsequent use, removing any residue from the wick at the same time. With four candles, it almost becomes a little ritual. Quite a pleasant one, as rituals go.

The four needn't always stay together

Of course, these black ribbed candles do not have to appear as a complete set every time. Two on the dining table, one on a sideboard and another in a suitable lantern can work just as beautifully.
