Ribbed Candle Velvet Lacquer Black 15 cm

Black can handle quite a lot of light

A laid table, a few glasses, perhaps some flowers – and right in the middle, a candle that does remarkably little to attract attention and still gets noticed. This black ribbed candle from the ENGELS KLASSIK collection by Engels Kerzen measures 15 cm high and 8 cm in diameter, combining pronounced vertical grooves with a deep matt velvet-lacquer finish. The solid-coloured paraffin wax is processed in Germany, while the candle itself is handcrafted and dipped. Its black velvet lacquer absorbs light rather than reflecting it, giving the fine ribbed structure greater depth and creating a beautifully calm, almost velvety appearance. There is a practical benefit too: the matt surface is resistant to fingerprints. With a burn time of approximately 68 hours, there is plenty of time for long evenings, quick dinners and everything in between. The paraffin used is vegan and REACH-certified. The result is a ribbed pillar candle that works just as naturally as a source of warm candlelight as it does as a decorative interior object – and looks rather good even when nobody remembers to light it.

A little architecture for candlelight

The ribbed shape takes the familiar silhouette of a classic pillar candle and gives it an almost architectural presence. In black, the contrast is particularly appealing: graphic and defined in daylight, noticeably softer once the flame is lit. That makes this candle surprisingly versatile. On the dining table it sits comfortably alongside white porcelain, clear glass and warm metallic finishes, but works equally well with colourful tableware and more natural, tactile materials. Place it on a sideboard, decorative plate or inside a suitable lantern and it becomes a quiet focal point. Group several ribbed candles in different colours or heights and they create an easy candle arrangement without requiring an elaborate styling plan. Black works throughout the year too: with pale natural shades in spring, timber and earthy colours in autumn, or fir green, brass and glass at Christmas. Engels Kerzen has been making candles in Germany since 1933, bringing traditional craftsmanship together with a keen eye for colour, surface and form. The ENGELS KLASSIK ribbed candle captures that approach particularly well. Behind its restrained appearance lies considerable knowledge of wax, wick and burning behaviour. Velvet lacquer is one of the manufacturer’s distinctive finishes, designed to catch light rather than strongly reflect it. The result is a matt sense of depth that gives darker colours such as black an especially expressive character. For an even burn, Engels Kerzen recommends trimming the wick to approximately 1 cm before first use and before relighting, while also removing any residue from the wick. A small ritual that makes a noticeable difference – candles, it turns out, appreciate a little attention too.
