Four matching ribbed candles, each 20 cm high, 8 cm in diameter and finished in deep black velvet lacquer: this set from the ENGELS KLASSIK collection by Engels Kerzen brings instant calm and structure to an arrangement. The vertical grooves give the familiar pillar-candle shape a graphic, almost architectural character, while the matt surface softens the black and gives it visual depth. Rather than strongly reflecting light, the velvet finish appears to absorb it, creating subtle shadows along the ribs. The effect is especially striking when all four candles are grouped together, as their repetition adds presence without making the setting feel busy. The velvet-lacquer surface is also resistant to fingerprints, a useful detail when arranging and rearranging them. Each candle is handcrafted and dipped in Germany from solid-coloured paraffin wax. The material is vegan and REACH-certified, and each candle offers an approximate burn time of 95 hours. These are not candles for one evening only. A set that takes quite a bit of work out of styling

Four identical ribbed candles immediately create a sense of visual rhythm. At 20 cm tall, they have enough presence for larger tables and more open interiors without overpowering their surroundings. Black is particularly versatile because it changes character depending on what sits beside it: calm with cream and natural tones, warm with brass or gold, crisp with glass and silver, and unexpectedly contemporary with stronger colours. Matt, ribbed and backed by decades of craft

Engels Kerzen has been making candles in Germany since 1933, combining traditional candle-making skills with a strong sense of colour, form and surface. Velvet lacquer is one of the manufactory’s characteristic finishes. Its matt quality means that light is reflected less strongly, giving the candle a deeper, calmer appearance. On the ribbed surface, that effect becomes even more pronounced as light and shadow travel along the vertical grooves, allowing the black finish to shift subtly throughout the day. Behind the restrained design lies considerable knowledge of wax, wicks and burning behaviour. Engels Kerzen recommends trimming the wick to approximately 1 cm before first lighting and before each subsequent use, while removing any residue from the wick. This small amount of care helps support an even burn and feels particularly worthwhile with approximately 95 hours of burn time per candle.

All four together, two and two, or everyone on their own

The advantage of a set of four is that it does not have to behave like one. Keep all four ribbed candles together on the dining table, split them into pairs across a sideboard and console, or place them individually in different rooms.
