A little more height, quite a lot more presence
This black ribbed candle from the ENGELS KLASSIK collection by Engels Kerzen brings a noticeably taller silhouette to the table, sideboard or console, measuring 20 cm high and 8 cm in diameter. Its vertical ribbed structure gives the familiar pillar-candle shape a calm, almost sculptural character, while the deep matt velvet-lacquer finish gives the black colour a soft, saturated appearance. Rather than strongly reflecting light, the surface visually absorbs it, creating subtle shadows along the grooves and giving the candle depth even when it is not lit. The velvet-lacquer finish is also resistant to fingerprints, a practical detail that is particularly welcome on a dark surface. Handmade and dipped in Germany from solid-coloured paraffin wax, the candle is vegan and REACH-certified. With a burn time of approximately 95 hours, it is made for many dinners, evenings and quiet moments. And at 20 cm tall, it has more than enough presence to stand on its own – a little confidence suits a candle rather well.
Black, and surprisingly easy to live with
The taller format is especially useful when an arrangement needs a little more vertical interest. On a large dining table, the ribbed candle creates a clear focal point between glassware, bowls and flowers; on a sideboard, it works just as well as a decorative object in its own right. It is particularly effective when grouped with shorter ribbed candles, classic pillar candles or tapers, as the variation in height immediately creates a more layered composition. Black is remarkably adaptable too: calm beside cream and natural tones, crisp with glass and metal, and almost graphic next to stronger colours. In autumn, it sits beautifully with timber and earthy shades; at Christmas, with fir foliage, brass or silver; and in spring, with paler materials and softer textures. Weddings, birthdays and dinner parties are equally suitable. In other words, it has little interest in waiting for the right season.
Craft that does not need to shout
Engels Kerzen has been making candles in Germany since 1933, with decades of experience shaping the way wax, wick, surface and burning behaviour come together. The velvet-lacquer finish is one of the brand’s distinctive treatments: matt, deep in appearance and designed to catch rather than strongly reflect the light. On the ribbed surface, this creates a subtle play of light and shadow that gives the candle its quiet depth. To support an even burn, Engels Kerzen recommends trimming the wick to approximately 1 cm before first lighting and before each subsequent use, while also removing any residue from the wick. It is a small amount of care for a candle with around 95 hours of burn time – and very much worth it.
It gets even better when different heights join in
