A little green. A lot of atmosphere.
Green can play quite a few roles. The Engels Kerzen ribbed candle in Velvet Lacquer Flechte chooses the wonderfully understated one: a muted, natural green that sits comfortably alongside wood, ceramics, glass and other home accessories. Its distinctive vertical ribbing gives the 15 cm tall pillar candle, with a diameter of 8 cm, an almost architectural quality. Made from paraffin wax, coloured throughout and handcrafted in Germany, this ribbed candle has a matt Velvet Lacquer finish that absorbs light rather than simply reflecting it. The result gives the Flechte shade a particularly soft, deep appearance. There is a practical side to all that good looks, too: the surface is resistant to fingerprints, which is rather useful when arranging and rearranging your candles until everything feels just right. With a burn time of approximately 68 hours, there is plenty of time for long dinners, quiet Sundays and all those evenings that were never supposed to involve candlelight but somehow ended up better for it.
It’s all in the ribs
The fine structure gives this ribbed candle a different character depending on its surroundings and the light. By day, it feels like a calm graphic object; once lit, the grooves and velvety matt surface become even more pronounced. Flechte is surprisingly easy to combine, too. Pair it with warm natural tones for an understated table setting, with cream and white for a lighter look, or introduce dark brown, black and metal for contrast. This makes the candle just as at home beside fresh branches in spring as it is amongst wood and ceramics in autumn or greenery at Christmas. It also works beautifully for weddings, birthdays and long dinner tables without ever looking as though it is waiting for a special occasion. And placed alone on a simple candle holder? It really doesn’t need much company.
Light still made with human hands
Engels Kerzen has been making candles in Germany since 1933, combining traditional craftsmanship with a genuine curiosity for colour, shape and surface. The ENGELS KLASSIK ribbed candle is a particularly good example. Its paraffin wax supports an even burn and a bright flame, while the candle itself is vegan. The Velvet Lacquer finish has been created to produce a matt surface that captures light and lends additional depth to the colour. The result is a candle that works as a decorative object before it has even been lit and reveals an entirely different, warmer character once the flame appears. Flechte gets along rather well with others
At 15 cm high and 8 cm in diameter, this ribbed pillar candle has enough presence for a sideboard, dining table or windowsill while remaining easy to arrange in a group. Mixing different heights or colours creates a more relaxed composition. At Christmas it can settle amongst greenery and dark candle holders; come spring, simply move it towards lighter materials. Keeping a good candle for one season only would seem rather a waste. For an even burn, trim the wick to approximately 1 cm before lighting and always place the candle on a suitable heat-resistant surface. After that, there is very little left to organise. Light it and let the evening take care of itself.
