Comfort happens to smell rather good with sandalwood
TRUE COMFORT is made for evenings when the weather outside can quite happily do whatever it likes. This SENTIMENTALS EASY scented candle by Engels Kerzen combines vegan, regional rapeseed wax with satin-finished glass in a deep slate grey and a warm fragrance that envelops the room rather than taking it over. Amber, vanilla and tonka bean create a soft, rounded opening. At its heart, autumn flowers meet heliotrope and rose, adding a floral dimension without losing the fragrance's warm character. Rue, sandalwood and musk form the base, lending the home fragrance a gentle woody depth. Visually, the slate-grey glass is deliberately restrained, allowing the candlelight to make more of an impression. Measuring 8 cm high and 9 cm in diameter, it sits comfortably on a coffee table, console, windowsill or dining table. The candle is made in Germany and offers an approximate burn time of 25 hours – enough for quite a few evenings when the main light is very welcome to take the night off.

The result works beautifully throughout Advent and Christmas, yet feels just as relevant in the weeks on either side. Its slate colour is equally independent of the festive calendar. The satin-finished grey glass pairs easily with fir green and natural wood as well as cream, smoked glass, ceramics and warm metallic tones. Place it among an Advent wreath and winter foliage for a seasonal arrangement, then simply leave it where it is once Christmas has passed. After the rapeseed wax has completely burned away, the glass can be cleaned and reused for small objects around the home.

Slate grey is surprisingly sociable
TRUE COMFORT has enough presence to stand alone, but its restrained slate glass also makes it easy to place among other candles. For a winter table setting, combine it with Engels Kerzen Fine Line taper candles, pillar candles or the brand's distinctive ribbed candles. Advent wreaths, lanterns, candle holders, bowls and natural foliage can add further layers without making the arrangement feel busy. Different colours from the SENTIMENTALS EASY collection also work beautifully together while unlit; when burning them, however, we would give each fragrance its own turn in the room. To make the most of the approximate 25-hour burn time, trim the wick to around 1 cm before the first lighting and again before each use, removing any residue from the tip. A candle snuffer allows the flame to be extinguished gently without blowing into the liquid wax. Then the evening can simply carry on. Good company, after all, does not always require a guest list.
