A little whirlwind of fire that quickly takes over the evening
At first, it is simply a slender glass cylinder standing on a grey base. Then you add fire and things become considerably more interesting. The höfats SPIN air 900 table fire in Concrete sends a real flame spiralling upwards through its transparent borosilicate glass cylinder, bringing light, movement and pleasant warmth to the table. At 40.5 cm tall and just 10.6 cm in diameter, this smaller SPIN remains pleasantly compact, yet the rising flame gives it a surprisingly strong presence. The grey concrete-look base creates a calm, architectural counterpoint to the clear glass and sits just as naturally on timber as it does alongside stone, metal or a contemporary sideboard. Inside is a refillable Bio-Burner designed for liquid höfats bioethanol, producing a bright and clearly structured flame. The fuel burns without odour, soot or smoke, while the 1,100-watt output provides noticeable warmth as well as a rather captivating view. SPIN air 900 is approved for indoor use in accordance with DIN EN 16647 and can also be enjoyed outside on the terrace or balcony. It burns for around 80 minutes without the Eco-Ring, increasing to as much as 120 minutes with the supplied ring fitted. Small enough for the table, yet interesting enough to become part of the conversation sooner or later.
So, how does a flame learn to twist?
The signature höfats SPIN flame vortex is created through the interaction of its Bio-Burner, glass cylinder and carefully controlled airflow. Incoming air is set into rotation, drawing the flame upwards in its distinctive spiral motion. It is this principle that turns a compact table fire into a moving light object, with a flame bright enough to remain clearly visible even in daylight. SPIN 900 uses the newer Bio-Burner technology and, unlike the earlier SPIN 90, runs exclusively on liquid höfats bioethanol fuel with the green cap rather than fuel gel. The closed burner incorporates a safety valve and can be refilled once it has completely cooled. Fit the supplied Eco-Ring to reduce the flame height and extend the burn time from approximately 80 minutes to as much as 120 minutes. The included extinguishing lid brings the flame to an end when required. Before refilling, höfats recommends allowing SPIN to cool back to room temperature for at least 10 to 15 minutes. Straightforward to use, leaving the complicated-looking part to the flame itself.

What exactly is höfats? Founded in 2015, the brand has its roots in Germany's Allgäu region and a design philosophy shaped by two disciplines that have belonged together from the very beginning: engineering and product design. Even the unusual name has a local story behind it. Höfats is a distinctive mountain in the Allgäu Alps and became the namesake for a company intent on rethinking fire without taking away any of its elemental appeal. The finished objects look refreshingly simple; the thinking behind them generally is not. SPIN air 900 is the more compact choice within the familiar SPIN fire collection and works particularly well wherever you want the atmosphere of a real flame without surrendering half the table to it. On the terrace, its swirling fire accompanies dinner and drinks; on a balcony it brings warmth to that hour between daylight and evening, while indoors it becomes an unusual light object with a genuine flame. At only 1.1 kg, it is also easy to place wherever the evening happens to be unfolding. The set includes the base, flame body, glass cylinder, Bio-Burner, safety container, Eco-Ring and extinguishing lid; the required höfats liquid bioethanol fuel is available separately. Those looking for a larger flame can explore the SPIN 1200 or take the fire outside with a MOON fire bowl.
