Contrasts that give memories just the right frame
Black and white can be rather uncompromising. The Natalini Nero OS photo frame from the QH20 collection, however, proves there is plenty of room for subtle detail in between. Surrounding a 13 x 18 cm photograph is a graphic interplay of black, white and pale sections, with contrasting textures giving the frame depth and a lively visual rhythm. The 20 mm wide frame is made from wood, has a lacquered surface and is made in Italy. Its geometric decoration attracts the eye without reducing the photograph in the middle to a supporting role – quite an important quality in a photo frame, really. The 13 x 18 cm format provides generous space for portraits, travel photographs, family pictures or images where smaller details deserve to remain visible. A stand at the back allows the Natalini frame to be displayed in either portrait or landscape orientation, while rotating tabs make inserting and changing photographs straightforward. A velour-like backing completes the reverse, giving even the side you rarely stop to admire a considered finish.
The eye sees geometry; behind it lies marquetry
The appeal of Nero OS goes beyond its contrasting colour palette. Behind its decorative pattern is the traditional technique of marquetry. Different veneers are precisely cut to shape according to a design and then assembled to create a complete motif. The individual sections form the decoration together, allowing natural variations in colour, texture and wood grain to contribute to its appearance. In other words, an inlaid pattern is not simply printed onto the surface; its character develops through the interaction of its separate elements. Geometric designs such as Nero OS make this especially easy to appreciate. Light and dark sections establish a rhythm around the photograph, with numerous small details coming together as one coherent composition. It is a technique with a long history, yet here it feels distinctly contemporary. The result turns a functional wooden frame into a home accessory that remains interesting long after you have memorised the photograph inside it.
Rather fond of frames since 1979
Natalini was founded in 1979 and is particularly known for its inlaid photo frames. The Italian company brings the long tradition of decorative inlay into a broad collection of colours, patterns and designs. Nero OS demonstrates how naturally this historic technique can sit alongside a clear, contemporary visual language. Instead of feeling nostalgic, the marquetry gains a modern presence through its black and white palette and graphic arrangement. That combination fits naturally with the LIVOSY approach: we are drawn to home accessories where design is more than surface decoration and where material and making contribute to an object's character. We also like objects that can genuinely mean something in everyday life. With a photo frame, that part is rather simple – you provide its most personal detail yourself.
A personal gallery has no need for museum rules
The Natalini QH20 Nero OS works beautifully as a standalone frame or as part of a more personal arrangement. Against pale surfaces, its darker sections become more pronounced; placed on dark wood or near stronger interior colours, the white and lighter details create a fresh contrast. Books, candles, small vases and objects collected over time can happily join the scene. Combining different Natalini photo frames and sizes adds another layer: recurring materials create a visual connection, while contrasting marquetry patterns and colours keep the arrangement from feeling overly planned. With its 13 x 18 cm photo size, Nero OS can take a slightly more prominent role and gives a chosen image plenty of room to be noticed. Perhaps it is a portrait, a favourite journey or an evening whose story only makes sense to you. Either way, it deserves somewhere better than between screenshot number 4,237 and a photograph of the supermarket car park.
