A tower with a surprising amount of suspense

PRINTWORKS Tumbling Tower from the Junior collection begins in wonderfully neat fashion: wooden blocks in bright yellow, fresh blue and deep green are stacked at right angles to create a tower that almost looks too good to send wobbling. Almost. Measuring 28.5 cm high, 8.5 cm wide and 8 cm deep, this colourful take on the classic stacking game is compact enough for easy play and striking enough to earn a place in the room afterwards. The blocks are made from wood, while the packaging uses FSC®-certified paper; the complete game weighs approximately 1 kg. The rules follow the familiar principle. The wooden blocks are arranged in layers, with each new level positioned at a 90-degree angle to the one beneath it. Then the interesting part begins. Players take turns carefully loosening and pulling a block from the tower without bringing the whole structure down. The removed piece is placed back on top, making the tower taller while its prospects of remaining upright become increasingly questionable. The rules are easy to grasp, but once the first block starts to wobble, steady hands, concentration and a little forward thinking suddenly become rather useful.

The charm of the PRINTWORKS Tumbling Tower lies in its wonderfully simple tension. Each round starts calmly and becomes a little more precarious with every move. Which block will slide out? Where can you pull without making life too easy for the next player? And was touching that particular piece really such a good idea? Children can understand the rules quickly, while the changing structure keeps the game entertaining for older players too. Dexterity and concentration play an obvious part, but there is room for strategy as well. Watching the tower carefully and thinking a move ahead can help reveal which blocks are safer to remove and where the structure is already becoming unstable. It is an uncomplicated analogue game that brings everyone's attention to the same place for a while. Phones can cope without us.

The nicest loss of control on the shelf
