Silver Grey may sound rather cool. The WEICH CALMO Junior hot water bottle quickly delivers quite the opposite. Measuring 23 × 18 cm with a 0.6-litre capacity, it is the compact member of the CALMO collection and an excellent choice when warmth does not need to occupy half the sofa. Inside is a classic rubber hot water bottle; outside, things become considerably more tactile. A handcrafted cover of dense alpaca fur completely surrounds the bottle, transforming a practical source of warmth into an exceptionally soft home accessory. Silver Grey moves between pale grey, silvery tones and natural variations that differ subtly from one piece of fur to another. These nuances and differences in texture are part of the character of the natural material rather than something to be hidden. The WEICH hot water bottle is handcrafted in Peru, where working with alpaca has a long tradition. 0.6 litres make a rather convincing case against being cold
CALMO's Junior size makes everyday warmth wonderfully uncomplicated. It takes up little room, is easy to reach for and works just as well during a quiet break on the sofa as it does as a compact bed warmer on chilly evenings. The alpaca-fur cover has more than a fluffy supporting role here. Alpacas live with considerable temperature fluctuations in the Peruvian Andes, and their fine fibres naturally possess insulating properties. Around the hot water bottle, the fur creates a soft layer that allows the warmth to feel gentle while keeping the rubber from sitting directly against the skin. Alpaca fibre also contains very little lanolin and naturally helps repel dust and dirt.
For safe use, fill the inner hot water bottle with water at a maximum temperature of 60°C. Boiling water must not be used, and CALMO should never be heated in a microwave. The maximum service life of the inner bottle is two years from purchase; it should also be checked regularly for cracks, porous areas or other signs of damage. The alpaca-fur cover requires relatively little maintenance. Carefully shaking it out and gentle regular brushing will help preserve its natural texture, while professional cleaning is recommended for more substantial soiling.
From the Andes to your favourite corner
The story behind WEICH Couture Alpaca genuinely began in Peru. Founder Jannik Weich first encountered the country as a teenager and, during later journeys, developed a deeper understanding of its people, alpaca farming and traditional craftsmanship. Together with David Kuttschrütter, this connection evolved into WEICH Couture Alpaca from 2017 onwards. The brand combines production in selected Peruvian workshops with a German approach to quality and uses Royal Alpaca for its alpaca-fur products.
The provenance of the fur is an important part of this approach. According to WEICH, alpacas are not killed specifically for their hides. The fur used comes from animals that have died naturally or is obtained as a by-product of meat production. Annual shearing and the sale of alpaca wool, meanwhile, remain an important source of income for many farmers in the Andes. This traceable relationship between provenance, material and craftsmanship is also why WEICH sits so naturally within the LIVOSY world: objects can certainly be beautiful, but they become far more interesting when there is substance behind the surface.
