PRINTWORKS Chess Dusty Blue takes some of the visual seriousness out of chess without losing any of the tension on the board. Instead of traditional black and white, soft dusty blue meets warm white across the familiar chequered surface, creating a colour combination that sits surprisingly naturally amongst coffee-table books, flowers and favourite home accessories. Part of the Classic Collection, the game combines wood, paper and acrylic and comes with 32 chess pieces in coordinating blue and white. The glossy playing surface adds depth to the colour, allowing the graphic pattern to shift subtly with changing light. Everything packs away inside the matching blue box, whose tactile-looking finish and large white “CHESS” lettering have much more in common with an art book than conventional board-game packaging. Its compact format also makes the PRINTWORKS chess set easy to store or take along when a rematch is happening elsewhere. Although, with a box this good-looking, putting it away in a cupboard feels rather unnecessary.
