It looks as though a very small boat might be about to moor alongside it. Turn the PHILIPPI HAMBURGER HEBER over, however, and its real purpose becomes clear: hidden underneath is a bottle opener for removing crown caps from beer, soft drinks and other bottles. Designer Andreas Ostwald has reduced the distinctive shape of a Hamburg harbour bollard to just 4 x 4 x 5 cm, transforming an everyday bar tool into a small design object. The compact opener is made from stainless steel with a mirror-polished nickel finish and wrapped with a piece of rope that completes its maritime character without overplaying the theme. At 229 g, this PHILIPPI bottle opener has a reassuring weight despite its compact dimensions, while the curved shape sits comfortably in the hand. Once the bottle is open, there is little reason to hide the HAMBURGER HEBER away in a drawer. Leave it on the bar, drinks trolley or shelf and it becomes part of the setting. After all, a bottle opener is usually needed precisely when the first bottle has already reached the table.

The HAMBURGER HEBER keeps its practical secret until you turn it over, revealing the functional underside designed to remove traditional crown caps. The HAMBURGER HEBER captures that philosophy on a wonderfully small scale: its inspiration is immediately recognisable, its function is cleverly integrated and its materials remain very much part of its visual identity. PHILIPPI continues to feature the opener in its collection, specifying stainless steel, a mirror-polished nickel finish and rope. The result takes up very little room while bringing plenty of personality to the table.

Permission to dock granted

The PHILIPPI HAMBURGER HEBER feels right at home amongst glasses, carafes and bottles. Place it on a drinks tray and it becomes a small conversation piece; keep it on the dining table and it is ready whenever a crown-capped bottle arrives.
