Hamburg harbour, just considerably smaller

A harbour bollard on the dining table sounds like a fairly ambitious docking manoeuvre. With PHILIPPI, however, neither a quay nor a deckhand is required. Designer Andreas Ostwald has transformed the distinctive silhouette of a ship's bollard into the HAMBURGER Salt Shaker, a table accessory measuring just 5 cm high and 4 cm in diameter. Despite its compact proportions, the silver-coloured shaker weighs a substantial 218 g, giving it a reassuring presence on the table. Its polished, nickel-plated surface reflects the light, glassware and colours around it, while natural-coloured rope wrapped around the narrow centre introduces a deliberately tactile contrast. Two small holes on top dispense salt neatly and turn the miniature bollard into an everyday condiment shaker. Made in China, the PHILIPPI salt shaker combines function and design without needing to make a great performance of either. You recognise the harbour reference, reach for the salt and perhaps only then notice quite how much maritime character has been packed into this little table companion.

Seasoning with a hint of the quayside

Andreas Ostwald reduces the substantial form found along the harbour to a compact object for the dining table while retaining its defining details: the curved silhouette, metallic shine and, of course, the rope. Good design can simply be there, ready to be noticed whenever you happen to look twice.

Two bollards make a rather good pair
