A tiny harbour spot reserved for pepper

At first glance, it looks rather like a miniature bollard that has quietly wandered away from Hamburg harbour. Designer Andreas Ostwald has taken the familiar shape of a harbour bollard and translated it into a condiment shaker measuring 4 cm in diameter. Its polished, black nickel-plated surface gives the small object a calm, dark presence, while natural-coloured rope wraps around the centre as a deliberately tactile contrast and makes the maritime inspiration immediately recognisable. Two fine holes at the top dispense the pepper, while its substantial weight of 218 g helps this compact PHILIPPI pepper shaker sit reassuringly on the table. Made in China, it turns an everyday kitchen accessory that might otherwise disappear amongst the salt, oil and napkins into a small design object worth leaving in view.
