Yatzy

A little luck. A surprising amount of ambition.

At first, there are only five dice on the table. A few rounds later, everyone has an opinion about the large straight, probability has become strangely personal and the final roll is receiving the attention of a minor sporting event. Yatzy Play by PRINTWORKS brings the classic dice game into a compact design box coloured in pink, coral, cream and blue. Measuring 16 x 11.5 x 4.2 cm and weighing just 0.2 kg, the set is easy to bring out, take along and put away after a game, although its graphic presentation makes the last part rather optional. Warm coral panels frame a cream centre and bold blue circle, while inside five blue dice with white pips wait for the next throw. The set also contains two blue pencils and a 50-page Yatzy score pad. Materials include paper, wood, polyester and acrylic, with FSC®-certified paper components. The rules will feel familiar to anyone who has played Yahtzee, Kniffel or similar dice games: roll up to five dice, build combinations and record the results on your score sheet. Ones through sixes, pairs, three and four of a kind, small and large straights, full house, chance and, of course, Yatzy turn a handful of dice into a surprisingly absorbing evening.

Flight mode has company tonight

Yatzy is the sort of game that does not require twenty minutes of instructions before anyone can enjoy themselves. It is quick to pick up, each round soon finds its rhythm and before long everyone is calculating, deciding what to keep and wondering whether one more roll is worth the risk. That simplicity is a large part of its appeal as a family game: very little preparation, yet a rather good reason to remain around the table together. With the Play series, PRINTWORKS gives the familiar dice game a visual identity far removed from the traditional games cupboard. The box feels closer to a graphic interior object, so leaving it on a coffee table or shelf seems entirely reasonable. The next game is therefore already within reach when an ordinary evening could use a little competition. As for whether Yatzy is mostly luck or brilliant strategy, we suggest settling that during the rematch.

Analogue, without making a retro fuss about it

PRINTWORKS was founded in Stockholm in 2017 by Annette and Patrik after they noticed a curious contradiction in modern life: we are constantly connected, yet time spent genuinely together can easily disappear between feeds, messages and screens. Their response was to revisit familiar analogue objects through contemporary design. Photo albums are made to be opened and browsed, games belong around a shared table and useful objects are designed well enough to remain visible afterwards. There is nostalgia in the idea, but it never feels stuck in the past. PRINTWORKS is less interested in rejecting digital life than in making offline moments tempting again. That approach sits naturally alongside the LIVOSY philosophy too: we choose objects that can become part of everyday life, add atmosphere and earn their place over time without demanding constant attention.
