An open door, a slight draught and suddenly the room develops a little drama of its own. The matt PHILIPPI HAMBURGER Stopper is quite happy to take charge. Designer Andreas Ostwald has scaled down the familiar mooring bollards of Hamburg harbour to a decidedly domestic 12 cm high and 11 cm in diameter. Weighing 1.63 kg, this grey PHILIPPI doorstop has reassuring substance and is designed to help keep doors where you want them. Its aluminium body has a matt, galvanised finish that gives the bold bollard silhouette a calm and understated appearance. Natural-coloured rope wraps around the narrow centre, introducing a warm, tactile contrast while making the maritime origins of the design immediately recognisable. Made in India, the HAMBURGER Stopper has very little shine, allowing the soft grey surface to sit quietly within a wide variety of interiors. On parquet, stone or tiles, it looks rather more like a small sculptural home accessory than an ordinary household helper. It just happens to take its day job rather seriously.

1.63 kilos of calm for doors that should stay open

Between the living and dining room, beside a home office or along the hallway, the HAMBURGER Stopper comes into its own wherever a door is welcome to remain open. Its substantial weight provides reassuring stability, while the compact footprint means it asks for very little floor space. The matt finish gives this version a particularly distinctive character: rather than reflecting its surroundings, the soft grey surface places the emphasis on the strong, almost graphic shape. Natural rope adds warmth and texture, pairing naturally with timber, linen, wool and other tactile materials. It works just as comfortably in a pared-back interior as it does amongst classic furniture or more industrial details. And for anyone with a connection to Hamburg, there is another layer to enjoy: a familiar piece of harbour scenery has quietly found itself a rather useful second career indoors.

Andreas Ostwald's design reflects the way PHILIPPI has approached everyday objects for many years. The owner-managed design company, headquartered in Henstedt-Ulzburg near Hamburg, creates home, lifestyle and gift accessories in which a clear idea can be just as important as the function itself. For the HAMBURGER Doorstop, inspiration did not have far to travel. The familiar mooring bollards found around harbours become the starting point for a home accessory that retains their distinctive silhouette without turning into an obvious nautical souvenir. Aluminium, the matt galvanised surface and visible rope all remain intentional parts of the design. That balance of purpose, material and an idea waiting to be discovered also feels very much at home at LIVOSY. We like objects that accompany everyday life and bring personality into a room without constantly demanding attention.

Matt or polished? The harbour does both

The HAMBURGER collection shows just how much a change of finish can alter the mood of the same design. This matt grey doorstop feels quiet, reduced and slightly more rugged, while the polished silver version plays more noticeably with light and reflections. The distinctive silhouette and maritime inspiration remain the same; only their presence within the room changes. PHILIPPI also carries the harbour-bollard idea onto the dining table and home bar with HAMBURGER salt and pepper shakers and the HAMBURGER HEBER bottle opener.
